In partnership with HelpAge India, Women's Interlink Foundation (WIF) is implementing a rehabilitation and support programme for 50 elderly former women in prostitution from the Kalighat and Sonagachi red-light areas of Kolkata. The initiative seeks to enhance the quality of life, dignity, and well-being of elderly women who have spent much of their lives in conditions of social and economic marginalization.
The beneficiaries, aged between 54 and 95 years, are predominantly single, retired women with limited or no family support networks. Many face challenges associated with ageing, poor health, social isolation, and economic insecurity. The programme provides essential support services while creating opportunities for social interaction, community participation, and emotional well-being.
Despite the adversities they have experienced, the beneficiaries actively engage in community-based activities and events whenever opportunities arise, demonstrating resilience, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to remain connected and involved within their communities. Through this initiative, WIF and HelpAge India continue to promote dignity, care, and social inclusion for one of the most vulnerable sections of society.
In the year of 2024-25, the following activities were undertaken:
We believe in developing and working with networks at community, national and international levels with a rights based approach.
